Official Site: www.thefourthkind.net
Director(s):Olatunde Osunsanmi

Producer(s): Paul Brooks, Joe Carnahan, Terry Robbins

Starring: Milla Jovovich, Will Patton, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Elias Koteas,
Corey Johnson, Enzo Cilenti, Daphne Alexander, Alisha Seaton, Julian Vergov, (IMDb).

The archival footage in this film is absolutely frightening, but it is not frightening in the supernatural sense involving ghost and demons. The fright one may feel from watching the archival footage is rooted in the prospect of being abducted in the comfort of one's sleep, while unconscious and defenseless; violated by beings unknown to the conditioned human mind. Imagine being dragged off your bed while screaming, and grabbing to items to prevent from being absconded as your skin cannot anticipate the the drills and other worldly sharp items that will momentarily pierce it.

What impressed me the most was the side by side display of the archival footage and how the actors portrayed the victims of the encounter of the fourth kind. The casting was good, and the acting mirrored the casting. Dr. Tyler's appearance in the archival footage was not reflected in the film, but Jovovich (multipass!) was splendid. According to metacritic.com, the film received generally unfavorable reviews, and rottentomatoes.com granted the film 13 fressh tomatoes, as oppose to 66 rotten ones thus far. I loved It! I scared me silly. I'll grade it an 85. Peace out! Movieporium.blogspot.com.

Flicks, Flicks, Flicks

Recently I saw the movie Surrogate starring Bruce Willis. Although the film appeared action pact from the previews-it was not. But the lack of action did not damper the film because the subject matter was thought provoking, and the pace was sufficient enough to repel boredom.
The film is essentially about people who live their lives through their surrogates (robots), and one of those people, the son of the scientist who invented the surrogate technology, is murdered while connected to his surrogate by an assault on his surrogate with a weapon that got into the hands of an anti-surrogate group. Again as a thought provoking film, I wondered how many people would actually live their lives through their surrogate. I thought it was very interesting, but I wanted a little more action. I'll grade it a 78.

Some of the other films that I have seen recently include Inglorious Bastards, which was amazing, from the acting to the story line. What a flick! Lets see what else...Halloween II, which was well produced and well directed but the symbolism made it a little weird, but it did add depth to the film. Nine, very entertaining but I thought it was missing something. Whiteout with Kate Beckinsale-was not bad, but the preview was misleading because the mystery to be discovered was something so mundane. Well that's all, peace out homies!

GI Joe Rise Of Cobra: Nano

Official Site: www.hasbro.com/gijoe/en_US/

Rachel Nichols, Kevin J. O'Connor, Gerald Okamura, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, Dennis Quaid(IMDb). PG-13,

As a fan of GI Joe as child, I wondered what a live GI Joe movie would be like , and now that it has finally happened, I must say I'm glad that the live action version of this film is unlike the animation series in reference to the costumes of the different characters. The live motion picture is more realistic because the characters had specialized uniforms within a formal military format. This film lived up to the hype. It is a quintessential blockbuster, marked by plenty of explosions and special effects, an entertaining fight scenes. The pace of this film was great. No lag. Non stop action. The dialogue in the script was not very sophisticated, but the script was not aiming for opulent dialogue. As an action movie, with great production, it did not disappoint. Unyielding entertainment. And the acting was sufficient for the nature of the film. According to metacritic.com the film received generally unfavorable reviews, and according to rottentomatoes.com the film received 32 fresh tomatoes to 53 rotten ones thus far. I liked it I thought it was great. I'll grade it an 85. Stay tuned movieporuim blogpsot.com. Oh! On a last note. I truly enjoyed the history that was provided about Snake Eyes, Duke, Ana, and the soon to be Cobra Commander.

Starring:Madeline Zima, Andrea Roth, Josh Stewart, Daniella Alonso, Robert Wisdom, Michael Reilly Burke,(IMDb). Rated-R, 88 min.

I don't recall seeing any previews for this film. I went to see it because a friend from work mentioned it to me. Well after seeing the film, I was rather disappointed with the ending. But ending aside, the film was gory, creative, and semi suspenseful, with the most creative parts being the traps spawned by the killer, whom I would have liked to know more about. Some more history about the killer would have helped me understand his purpose more. Admittedly he was a semi charismatic killer, because the weird mask made him frightful to some extent. Overall it was OK I'll grade it a 75. Stay tuned, movieporium.blogspot.com.

Producer(s):Leonardo DiCaprio, Susan Downey, Jennifer Davisson Killoran, Joel Silver

Starring: Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Isabelle Fuhrman, CCH Pounder, Jimmy Bennett, Margo Martindale,(IMDb). R-123min.

This film definitely surprised me. When I saw the preview it appeared this film was simply another interesting psychological thriller about a maniacal child with an insatiable blood lust. But The Orphan was more than that, because it had an amazing but plausible twist.

The Orphan had a good pace. The scenes were well edited. The transition from one scene to the next flowed nicely, and that helped the plot remain pronounced, as the aim of the film was not lost. The scenes were relevant to the plot twist, and in retrospect once the plot twist is revealed you can fully understand the motives of the antagonist. That's probably the case with good plot twist films. According to metacritic.com the film earned mixed reviews, and rottentomatoes.com granted the film 26 fresh tomatoes to 33 rotten ones. I liked it. I'll grade it an 85.

Bruno: World Wide

Official Site: www.thebrunomovie.com
Director(s):Larry Charles
Writer(s): Sacha Baron Cohen
Producer(s): Anthony Hines

Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen, Gustaf Hammarsten, Clifford Bañagale, Josh Meyers,Bono, and
Elton John(IMDb). Rated-R. 83min.

Bruno is a creative piece of vulgarity encasing social commentary about attitudes toward homosexuality, and fascinations with celebrities, which Bruno so ardently wants to become. If one could stop laughing, and being shocked at the measures that Bruno takes to become a celebrity; it's possible to notice the film's social commentary is largely sardonic about pop culture's focus on the inane, and even in its efforts to express genuine concerns for sociopolitical issues, pop culture's efforts still appear superficial.

Social commentary excluded, Bruno delivered as anticipated, and that was an array of wild, funny, shocking, and unthinkable antics that induced discomfort and laughter. Sacha Baron Cohen's ability to play socially challenged and lovable characters is a quite a gift. According to metacritic.com the film received mixed reviews, and rottentomatoes.com granted the film 111 fresh tomatoes to 46 rotten ones thus far. Good sttuff, I'll grade it an 83. This sequel was amazing and it definitely lived up to the hype. There was more action, more laughs, and more Optimus prime, and less lag. The production was just as good as the first film. Michael Bay has done it again. The film has been released for eight days and it earned over 239 million thus far. Optimus Prime kicked ass in this film, and what a joy that was. Good Stuff! Official Site: www.catchthetrain.com

Producer(s):Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Tony Scott, Steve Tisch

Starring: Denzel Washington, John Travolta, Luis Guzmán, Victor Gojcaj, John Turturro, James Gandolfini(IMDb). Rated-R 106min.

The taking, the taking, the taking of my full attention. This was a delight. I wonder what the 70's version of the film is like. In any event, when I saw the preview, I was not enthused. I thought OK, I'll check it out. So finally when the the film was released- honestly, I'm still waiting for Transformers, and GI-Joe. I didn't even know the release date of this film, but I'm glad I saw it.

Washington was great, and Travolta was explosive. The support cast was stellar. It was good to see Gandolfini again. It was an awesome cast. Ya know, I'm experiencing writers block right now, and yeah the casting was great moving on.

Washington's character was humble, imperfect, and lovable. And Travolta's character was driven, unethical, comedic, and charismatic. Washington's character was a regular working guy, and Travolta's character was an avaricious criminal who seemed genuinely concerned about the struggles of the average worker; there was a modicum of honor in his disposition.

Pelham 123 was not boring at all, very engaging. I think the dialogue between Travolta and Washignton was the most amusing part of the film. According to metacritic.comn, the film earned mixed reviews, and rottentomatoes.com granted the film 61 fresh tomatoes to 59 rotten ones thus far. I enjoyed this film I'll grade it an 82. Producer(s): Derek Anderson, Moritz Borman, Victor Kubicek, Jeffrey Silver

Starring:Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Moon Bloodgood, Anton Yelchin, Bryce Dallas Howard Common,(IMDb). PG-13, 130min.

Well what can I say about Terminator Salvation? I can say it was awesome. Not a dull moment, very exciting, and hopeful. Bale portrayed a sincere John Connor who cared deeply about his fellow humans. As I watched the film I felt how important Connor was even though most of the resistance only knew him by his voice, a voice that was a beacon of hope.

The production epitomized movie craftsmanship. The filth, and rustic nature of post "judgment day" life was so well defined on screen, the depravity the characters experienced was tangible. Living parsimoniously, eating two day old coyote, and walking around with soiled skin, and soiled clothes, were living conditions the characters considered common, but certainly not favorable, and I felt for these characters.

The action scenes were well directed. I was so amazed at how one aspect of the actions scenes tied in with another aspect of the actions scenes. It's difficult to describe, but in simple terms the action scenes were intricate, and they "kicked ass". This film definitely delivered. According to metacritic.com the film received generally mixed reviews, and rottentomatoes.com granted the film 53 fresh tomatoes to 100 rotten ones. This film was awesome. I'll grade it an 85. Starring: Tom Hanks, Ewan McGregor, Ayelet Zurer, Stellan Skarsgård, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Armin Mueller-Stahl, (IMDb). PG-13, 138 min.

I was not too excited about seeing this movie, and it certainly was not on my to see list, but thank goodness I saw it, well, honestly I was going to see it anyway. In any event, from the antimatter research center to the costumes , I was really impressed with the over all production of the film. The production really delivered the essence of Rome, even though I have never visited Rome.

The pace was great; there was no lag, or boredom, and the major parts of the film such as antimatter were explained expeditiously and clearly. I don't think this film was suspenseful, but the sense of urgency in the plot was pronounced through the skillful detective work of Professor Langdon, as he deciphered the significance of one symbol to the next.

Overall this film was fun, fast paced, well acted, and very entertaing. According to metacritic.com, the film earned generally mixed reviews, and rottentomatoes.com granted the film 65 fresh to 110 rotten tomatoes thus far. Good stuff. I'll score it an 85. Stay tuned, movieporium.blogspot.com.

Producer(s): J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof

Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana,Leonard Nimoy, Bruce Greenwood,Karl Urban,Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin(IMDb).

"Space...the final frontier", this particular Star Trek film has surpassed the frontiers of the preceding Star Trek films I have seen. Besides being exciting, funny, and emotional, Star Trek (2009), was explained quite well. When all the characters that we are familiar with, such as Scotty, and Dr. McCoy were introduced, it was like seeing old friends.

Seemingly, what distinguished this film from the previous films was the absence of lag. It seems like Abram's kept this in mind, and directed the film so that in every scene there was something essential and entertaining occurring. In the other Star Trek films that I have scene, I remember the lag, for at some point the pace of the film would slow down, and it would become slightly boring. Certainly, that is not the case in this film.

The casting was impeccable but William Shatner should of had a cameo .Even though detecting Eric Bana took some time on my part. It was difficult not to like the cast. My favorite was Simon Pegg as Scotty. With that said, it seems like this is a lightning in a bottle type casting. According metacritic.com the film received generally favorable reciews, rottentomatoes.com granted the film 195 fresh tomatoes to 9 rotten ones thus far. Awesome. I'll grade it a 95. Writer(s): David Loughery
Producer(s): William Packer

Starring: Idris Elba, Beyoncé Knowles, Ali Larter, Jerry O'Connell, Jerry O'Connell, Bruce McGill(IMDb). Rated-PG13. 105 minutes.

It all began when Lisa(Larter) and Derek(Elba) met in the elevator. After chatting briefly, Derek discovers Lisa is a temp, but later Derek also discovers Lisa has an obsessive character that has focused on capturing is affection by intruding into his life. From spying on Derek's telephone calls, to unwanted sexual advances , Lisa wanted Derek at any cost, even if it meant splitting him from his wife, but of course his wife felt differently.

Steady and slow but interesting, interesting but not extraordinary, Obsessed was simply entertaining. The story was predictable, and it could have benefited from a plot twists. There were no surprises to spark the the mind into amazement. Obsessed had an unappealing and ineffectual sex scene (if it could be considered that) that could have added a strong basis for conflict in the story, which could have also been the climax of the film. Notably this is a sanitized tale of fatal attraction, that features great acting that could have served the audience better with an R rating. This film was simply entertaining. I'll rate it a 72. State of Play: Sonia

Official Site: stateofplaymovie.net
Director(s): Kevin Macdonald
Writer(s): Matthew Michael Carnahan, Tony Gilroy
Producer(s): Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner,

Starring: Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Helen Mirren, Robin Wright Penn, Jason Bateman, Jeff Daniels(IMDb). PG-13, 127 min.

Sonia Baker is the lead researcher in congressman Stephen Collins's (Affleck) quest to expose a powerful private military companie's exploits. Collins develops a romantic affair with Sonia who ends up being murdered, but Sonia Baker's death is connected to two other murders, which Collins who is later informed, is linked to the private military company he is investigating. But as reporter Cal Mcaffrey( Crowe), of the Washington Globe, former roommate to the congressman, continues to venture deeper into connecting the figures of this murder mystery, he discovers, those who were presumed innocent are not so innocent, including his friend congressman Collins.

Besides being a good investigative journalistic crime drama,
State of Play is also a good political thriller, because it provides the audience a glimpse of what those who follow politics already suspect, and that is, corporations and politicians are immune to extrication in their respective relationships. And such a relationship is the basis for clandestine quid pro quo deals. This film certainly explores that aspect of business and politics luringly. The decline of readership, and profits of newspapers is also presented in this film, as newspapers are not only obligated to report the news, they have to sell it. The struggle between deadlines and journalistic integrity is explored quite honestly, and I found that refreshing.

Featuring great actors, an intricate well paced plot, descent character development,
State of Play is certainly worth watching. The story was engaging. It did not lag. According to metacritic.com, the film received generally favorable reviews, and rottentomatoes.com granted the film 90 fresh tomatoes to 32 rotten ones thus far. Good Stuff. I'll rate it an 85. And they decided, to continue living a fabulous life, they entered into corporate spying with a plan to fleece one of two major corporations that are engaged in a heated competition to be the best. Both of these corporations are unaware of the collusion of Koval and Stenwick. As the plan to fleece one of the corporations is approaching full execution, Koval and Stenwick encounter a big surprise.

Absolutely not formulaic. Films about corporate spies, and counter corporate intelligence, are seldom released, and this is perhaps one of the most original films that I have seen. Certainly the film had a plot that is not commonly explored, and I appreciate the originality of the entire movie. For those who enjoy films with the usual formula, this may be disappointing, as one woman was in the theater last night.

The writing was smart and intricate, and all the actors delivered awesome performances. As usual, Tom Wilkinson was amazing, but so was Paul Giamatti, Julia Roberts, and Clive Owen. In 1959 a peculiar elementary student named Lucinda wrote a full page series of numbers to be placed in a time capsule as part of a class project. 5o years later when the capsule was opened at the same elementary school, these series of numbers, was given to Caleb Koestler. As Caleb tried to make sense of these numbers, he looked up, and he saw a mysterious figure starring at him from a distance. Although Caleb was not suppose to, he took the page of numbers home, and subsequently his dad, professor Koestler, that night, while alone downstairs mildly inebriated, noticed what seemed like a pattern as he looked at the page. Minutes later, Koestler began linking these patterns to major catastrophic events, but there were events that had not transpired, and Professor Koestler set out to warn the people, while dealing with the mysterious men who monitor his house.

This film was fun to watch, because it did not lag; it was fast paced, well explained, and coupled with very well directed action scenes, the result was, a movie that kept the audience's attention from the beginning, to the end. The catastrophe scenes, were impactful with graphic details that invoked discomfort, but that is only because the scenes were so well directed. Actually, the entire movie was well directed, particularly becuase all the elements of the film were so well explained, except for one, namely, the little black stones. I still do not understand their function in relation to the "whisper people". I loved the ending. Automatiaclly, I thought about "Genesis". According to metacritic.com the film received mixed reviews, and rottentomatoes.com granted the film, 18 fresh tomatoes to 54 rotten ones for an overall bad review. I disagree with the critics; I thought the film was great. Ill score it an 85.

The Watchmen are being targeted for execution, and Rorschach is determined to find out who is behind the scheme to kill these brave superheroes. As he investigates deeper, he encounters some of his old superhero partners, whom he eventually will come to call his friends once again, but Rorschach will be shocked once he realizes who is ultimately plotting to kill the Watchmen.

After waiting in intense anticipation to see this movie, at first I was not impressed but mildly puzzled and bored simultaneously. However, I resolved that although the first half of the movie was slow, and uninteresting, it was a necessary explanation to why the events transpired in the manner that did they did. The film began to take shape in the scenes where the history of the Watchmen was being explained; at that point I began to understand how all the elements of the story worked to form an intelligible plot. Indeed it was quite a plot. Amazing.

The fight scenes were clear, in that, it was apparent where the kicks and punches landed. I was hoping the trailer would not have been better than the movie, and my hopes were realized. As a superhero movie Watchmen definitely does not disappoint, as the costumes were designed well. Producer(s): Patrick Aiello, and Ashok Amritraj

Starring: Kristin Kreuk, Chris Klein, Neal McDonough, Robin Shou, Moon Bloodgood, Josie Ho, Taboo, and Michael Clarke Dunca, (IMDb). Rated PG-13, 96 minutes.

Chun Li was the daughter of a wealthy businessman who taught her martial arts. She was a beloved daughter who was bound to spend the rest of her life playing the piano. But one night all of that changed when Bison invaded the Li's residence, and kidnapped her father. Years went by as her father was held captive by Bison, but Chun Li always hoped she would see her father again. And one day she mysteriously received a scroll written in ancient Chinese, and that scroll put her the quest to find her father and to fight for Justice.

Chun Li did not wear her classic outfit as seen from the video game, and she performed the spinning bird only once. Notwithstanding, casting Kristin Kreuk as Chun Li was a good choice, and she seemed convincing as an action star. For the most part, historically, this film was surprisingly well explained, as the background of the major characters was detailed satisfactorily. But what was not explained were the mystical aspects of Gen and Chun li's extraordinary powers. The action scenes were not off the charts in their level of amusement and creativity, but they were sufficiently entertaining. On a final note, this film was somewhat melodramatic, but it was OK; I'll score it a 73. Stay tuned movieporium.blogspot.com.

Starring: Shane West, Edward Burns, Ving Rhames, Sergey Gubanov, Martin Sheen, and Tamara Feldman(IMDb). Rated PG-13, 106 minutes.

As Max Peterson ( Shane West) checks in to the hotel, the attendant hands him a box. He thought it was peculiar, but he accepted the box anyway. While standing in his hotel room he opened the box, and he found a mobile device that resembled a cell phone. However this cell phone did not ring. It sent him text messages from an unknown source. These messages helped Max earn a lot of easy money in the hotel casino; the sort of money that attracted the attention of hotel security, and the FBI; but Max, the FBI, and hotel security were in for a surprise, when they began investigating the source of the text messages.

This film was not very exciting, but it was interesting, and the pace of the film kept me engaged, but while I was watching this movie, I could not understand the engaging factor because I was longing for action. While the film did have action, the action scenes were not mind blowing, but they were crafted well enough to be considered mildly exciting. The ending of the film had a satisfactory measure of suspense, and it was rational but anticlimactic. This film was Ok. I'll score it a 72. Stay tuned, movieporium.blogspot.com.

The International: Credit and Mayhem

Producer(s): Lloyd Phillips, Lloyd Phillips, and Richard Suckle

Starring: Clive Owen, Naomi Watts, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Ulrich Thomsen, Felix Solis, and
Jack McGee (IMDb). Rated-R. 118 minutes.

Louis Salinger (Owen)has been investigating the lending practices of the International Bank of Business and Credit; he realized, anyone who has been on the brink of exposing the bank's illegal activities has died. And his current efforts involving possible revelations from a high ranking executive from the bank has resulted in two deaths, the executive himself and Louis's partner. Affected by indignation, Louis is more determined than ever to expose the bank.

I was excited about seeing this film, but admittedly, I was on the precipice of boredom as I waited for a defining and poignant scene to indicate the alluring controversial aspects of banking in general. Thankfully that scene occurred during the meeting between Louis( Owen), Eleanor ( Watts), and Umberto Calvini. Although that scene was significant, however, the focus of the plot was to expose the bank's activities through Louis and Eleanor's adamant investigations of the murders connected to the bank.

Although there is some action in this film, it is not an action movie, but it certainly is a good investigative thriller with the Guggenheim scene being the most exciting part. The ending was logical but anticlimactic while being satisfactory. According to metacritic.com, the film received generally mixed reviews, and rottentomatoes.com granted the film 70 fresh tomatoes to 64 rotten ones. Good stuff, I' ll score it a 76. A group of young adults have disappeared in the woods where a supposed disfigured maniacal killer by the name Jason duels. Six weeks later another group of young adults visit those woods, along with a stranger named Clay Miller who is searching for his sister Whitney who was a member of the previous group that has been declared missing. Clay's search leads him to an abandoned camp called Crystal Lake where him and his new friend Jenna notice a morbid and tall figure carrying a beheaded body. In fear of being massacred, Clay and Jenna run out of the camp to avoid being killed.

By the time they reached the rest of the group to warn them about what they saw, Jason was already on the prowl. There was an effective use of color in the scenes featuring Camp Crystal Lake. The brown and greenish layer in those scenes was incredibly useful in depicting howJason lived a filthy and marginal domestic life. Apparently, Jason does not practice hygiene, and nor does he clean his house. The use of the aforementioned colors in the production of those scenes was efficacious in arousing the audience in feeling uncomfortable about how dirty the house was.

The the dialogue in the script was average. Witty jokes entertained the mind on a mundane level while the casting was platitudinous in its typical grouping of an Asian, and African American while the remainder of the group was Caucasian. As usual the Asian and the African American are coupled in some capacity, either romantic or platonic, platonic in this case. This film was well produced, but more suspense would have benefited the film. I'll score it a 73.
